Jacob L. Mey

1926–2023.

I have known Jacob L. Mey since 2002–2003, mainly through correspondence (initially letters, then emails). Once I met him at an unforgettable conference organized by Fabrizio Macagno and myself at the University of Lisbon. Jacob acted as a chief-editor, warden-angel, and exorcist. He studied as priest early in his life and had obtained the qualification of exorcist. He said he did not engage in real exorcisms, but he certainly managed to have a positive, creative influence on others. He died at the premature age of 96 (I am saying this because he had the energy of accomplishing much more, I suspect). In his eighties the publisher Elsevier decided to remove him as chief-editor of Journal of Pragmatics, a journal he founded together with Hartmut Haberland. The editor of Elsevier was probably under the (false) impression that a man in his eighties could not competently direct an important journal. Boy, was he wrong. Jacob demonstrated that he had other projects in mind and founded a new journal with John Benjamins, “Pragmatics and Society”. Mey had the idea that pragmatics had a liberatory or emancipatory function (a social function in fighting all forms of social and political oppression) and was clearly allied with Critical Discourse Analysis. Jacob had a talent for recognizing one’s best ideas. Once he encouraged me to publish my paper on Grice’s circle, despite my reluctance. I was lucky because he corrected some of my papers either on a plane or before his fireplace, caught by a snowstorm in Norway. I was always surprised by the number of things he changed in the text, something that only a person expert in communication (and in editing books) could do. Mey encouraged me, as well as many others.

Mey had deep knowledge of the classical world and of many other things outside linguistics. He was at home with Aristotle, St Augustine, Saint Therese of Avila and many other eminent scholars. Once he undertook the task of correcting all papers of our edited volume “Interdisciplinary studies in pragmatics, culture and discourse (Springer)”, while I was in the hospital dealing with a bad disease. His encouragement under those circumstance was really tangible. To describe Mey’s attitude to friendship, one has to go back to the world created by Dickens in David Copperfield.

The good guys win over the bad guys because they socialize, keep strong ties and help one another when needed. So, the magic world of benevolent and supportive friends found in David Copperfield was revived. Mey had a central place in this world. Through Mey, I also met Istvan Kecskes, who, in addition to publishing some of my papers, recommended me for many other things. I regret not being well enough to spend a lot of time with Jacob at the Lisbon conference, although we sat at the same table, side by side and talked about many things. The other thing I remember was Mey’s advice to give titles to each section of a long poem of mine, perhaps my best, written with the desire of competing with Gray’s ‘Elegy written in a country churchyard’. Jacob’s desire for order and the need to be communicative prevailed in him until the very end. His last letter asked me for prayers.

I could write much more, but I merely end this eulogy saying that Jacob Mey was one of the best editors and pragmaticists of our time. He thought that good, original papers should be published in his journals even if they need strong editorial support. Jacob was always ready to take a risk with those papers.

Mey’s exemplary life, broad scholarly knowledge, and extraordinary character leave a heritage of good thoughts, solace, courage, and belief that life is worth living in all of us.

Prayer to St Michael Arcangel

St. Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,
and do thou,
O Prince of the heavenly hosts,
by the power of God,
thrust into hell Satan,
and all the evil spirits,
who prowl about the world
seeking the ruin of souls. Amen. .

O glorious prince St. Michael,
chief and commander of the heavenly hosts,
guardian of souls, vanquisher of rebel spirits,
servant in the house of the Divine King
and our admirable conductor,
you who shine with excellence
and superhuman virtue deliver us from all evil,
who turn to you with confidence
and enable us by your gracious protection
to serve God more and more faithfully every day.
